If you’re curious how we could make a sangria without any wine, you’re not alone. We were pretty stumped at first, too. To mimic the dry, robust flavor of red wine, we had the genius idea to swap in black tea. Then we steeped rich, autumnal spices in simple syrup for a burst of spiciness. The results? Ingredients

cup sugar

cinnamon sticks

teaspoons whole allspice
1 1/2
teaspoons whole cloves

slices (1/4-inch) gingerroot

black tea bags
2
cups pomegranate juice
1
cup white grape juice
1
cup orange juice
1
medium orange, cut into thin rounds
1
medium lime, cut into thin rounds
2
cans (12 oz each) LaCroix™ lime-flavored sparkling water, chilled
Ice cubes, if desired

    In 1-quart saucepan, heat water, sugar, 4 of the cinnamon sticks, the allspice, cloves and gingerroot to boiling over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low; simmer 15 minutes. Remove from heat; add tea bags, and steep 5 minutes. Remove tea bags; cool 1 hour. Strain, and discard solids.

    In large pitcher, stir tea mixture, remaining 2 cinnamon sticks, pomegranate juice, white grape juice, orange juice, orange and lime slices. Refrigerate at least 2 hours until chilled.

    Just before serving, stir in sparkling water. Serve over ice.

Expert Tips

  • An orange slice cut in half, along with a slice of lime, makes a lovely garnish for each glass.
