Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 slices (1/4-inch) fresh gingerroot
  • 2 teaspoons whole allspice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 2 cups pure cranberry juice, chilled
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine, chilled
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries

Steps

  • 1
In 1-quart saucepan, heat sugar, water, cinnamon sticks, gingerroot, allspice, cloves and peppercorns to boiling over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cool 30 minutes.
  • 2
Strain syrup, reserving cinnamon sticks, and discarding rest of spices; refrigerate about 1 hour or until cold.
  • 3
In large pitcher, mix syrup with cranberry juice. Add red wine and brandy. Stir to combine. Add cranberries and reserved cinnamon sticks; serve cold.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
Merlot is our go-to for red wine in this recipe. It has a good flavor, with hints of fruit and spice, so it pairs well with the cranberry juice and spiced simple syrup.
  • tip 2
Planning on taking this drink with you to the party? You can combine the spiced simple syrup with the cranberry juice and bring in a sealable container. Bring unopened bottles of red wine and brandy to combine with the cranberry juice mixture just before serving. Any leftover brandy would make a great hostess gift!
  • tip 3
If you like your sangria a little more on the boozy side, you can go ahead and increase the amount of brandy to 1/2 cup.
  • tip 4
Black peppercorns might seem like an unusual ingredient to add to a sangria, but they add a nice pop of spice without being overwhelming.
