You're only three ingredients and one step away from the best powdered sugar icing you’ve ever had. It’s a bold claim but we stand behind it. The silky texture and sweet but subtle vanilla flavor of this icing is a major upgrade for cinnamon rolls, waffles and baked desserts, to name a few. We’ve even heard this icing is pretty darn good all on its own. Needless to say, we won’t judge you for eating it right out of the bowl.

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

    Mix powdered sugar, vanilla and milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until spreadable (mixture will thicken slightly as it sets).

  • Transform this powdered sugar glaze by adding a little coconut, almond or any of your other favorite flavored extracts.
  • For a richer icing, add a tablespoon of butter extract to the glaze. The buttery flavor will taste especially great with butter-based desserts.
  • To prevent the icing from running, make sure your dessert is completely cool before adding the powdered sugar frosting.
  • Store any unused frosting in an airtight container; refrigerate and use within five days. Before reusing, bring icing to room temp and give it a good stir.

  • This frosting recipe is so simple. Just powdered sugar, vanilla and a little milk is all you need to make a homemade icing. You can substitute coconut milk or almond milk if you want a non-dairy version; a little orange juice would work, too. It’s a pretty foolproof formula! And you can adjust the amount of liquid depending on what consistency you want: a little more will give you a thinner glaze; a little less will give you a more spreadable texture.
