I’m convinced the best place to celebrate New Year’s Eve is at home.

I like to avoid places that involve expensive tickets and lengthy lines for drinks or food.  I also like to avoid being on the roads; it is, after all, a notoriously dangerous night.

Staying home, however, does not mean that you have to sacrifice fun. Far from it, in fact!

Not convinced?  Here are some advantages to a home-based celebration:

  • You can have all the drinks and food you want without waiting in line.

  • You can play the music you choose.

  • There’s no “last call!”

  • No waiting for an available taxi to bring you home.

To make your home event as stress-free as possible, declare it a potluck. Ask each guest to bring something to share, including food, sweets, and drinks. This spreads the work out and ensures a great variety of munchies. As the hostess, make sure you have enough plates, utensils, and cups on hand.

Assign guests to bring something savory, something sweet, or a drink to share.  Luckily, Tablespoon has got you covered for recipes in all of these areas. If guests ask what they should bring, you can easily steer them in the right direction.

Drinks

Set up a bar in your home. Have several guests bring the ingredients for fun cocktails and then print up directions for how to put them together and display them at the bar. Have a cocktail shaker, glasses, lots of ice, and appropriate garnishes out as well. Here's a few recipes that make for a delicious toast:

Also, a cocktail that includes Champagne is a New Year’s Eve must. Here’s a few unique and fun ones to try:

And of course, assign a few guests to bring Champagne for the traditional midnight toast!

Desserts

Don’t skimp on desserts! Ask multiple guests to bring sweets, so guests will have plenty of choices for their last indulgences before New Year’s resolutions begin.

Cookie bars are the perfect treat to bring to a potluck since they are easy to make.  Here are a few delicious options:

There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than safely surrounded by friends, family, and fabulous food!

Happy New Year!
