Step By Step

Feta, watermelon, basil and blueberries skewer together to make patriotic bites of bliss.

As prepared by Girl Versus Dough,

Cute, easy and 4th of July ready.

Drop everything. Stop doing whatever you’re doing and make these Red, White and Blue Bites. It’s that important because these babies are BOMB.

They’re also insanely easy to make. Like, I feel silly even giving you a recipe for this. But I will, because there is a method to the skewering. There is not, however, a method to eating them. Unless you count shoveling as a method—because that’s the route I took straight to my mouth when I made these refreshing, easy, no-bake appetizers.

In addition to shoveling in one’s mouth, they also happen to be great for summer outdoor food festivities such as picnics and potlucks and gatherings around the campfire singing “Kumbaya” – if that’s a thing you do. Ahem.

ANYWAY, let’s make some no-bake bites!

Red, White and Blue Bites

To start, you’ll need a couple of blocks of salty feta cheese. Use a melon baller or a very small cookie scoop to scoop out 1-inch balls of feta from the blocks.

Next, use a melon baller to scoop out 1-inch balls of watermelon. So fancy!

Red, White and Blue Bites

You’ll also need fresh blueberries and basil leaves, so be sure to have those on hand.

To make the appetizers, skewer a blueberry onto a toothpick, then add a watermelon ball. Add a small basil leaf, folded or rolled-up (or a torn/chopped part of a larger basil leaf) to the toothpick, then add a feta ball. Add another watermelon ball and a blueberry. And that’s it! Repeat until all the feta and watermelon is used up.

Red, White and Blue Bites

These are so patriotic and fun and easy and tasty and refreshing and sweet and salty and flavorful and really, I could go on and on about them but I think it’s in all of our best interests at this point to do as I said before…

Drop everything and make these bomb bites! Eating them whilst singing “Kumbaya” is optional. Perhaps the Pledge of Allegiance is better?

Tips

Serve appetizers with a balsamic reduction on the side or drizzled over the top.

Sprinkle a little sea salt on the appetizers just before serving to bring out the flavor of the watermelon.
