(17.5 ounce) pouch Betty Crocker™ sugar cookie mix
tablespoon flour, plus more to dust work surface
cup (1 stick) butter, softened
large egg
Betty Crocker™ neon food coloring gels
Betty Crocker™ red cookie icing

    Follow package instructions to make cookie dough.

    Divide dough in 4 equal parts.
  • 3
    Color dough using pink, orange, purple, and green coloring.

    Dust work surface with flour. Roll cookie dough out to about 1/8 inch thickness.

    Cut hearts using a 2 1/2 inch cutter.

    Cut an inch long notch out of the pointed end of the heart that is just a bit wider than your mugs or glasses.

    Set cut outs an inch apart on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

    Freeze for 15-30 minutes.

    Heat oven to 375°F.

    Bake cookies for 7-8 minutes.

    Pipe Valentine's Day messages onto cookies using cookie icing.

  • Do you remember getting your first box of conversation hearts? I sure do.

    My mom would always give us a box on Valentine's Day. We only got candy on holidays or special occasions and I had a huge sweet tooth, so with most candies (like the jelly beans at Easter) I would just grab handfuls and pop them all into my mouth. I couldn't wait to gobble them up.

    But I didn't do that with conversation hearts. I'd pour my box out onto the table, turn them all right side up and read each and every mushy, corny, silly sentiment that was printed on top before eating a single candy. As an adult, I have to admit that each year, I still find myself reading each heart before popping them into my mouth. The imprints have changed over the years, and it's always fun to see what's new.

    Much like the changing messages on the candies, I like to find new ways to create the look of a conversation heart in a dessert. Over the years I've made conversation heart cheesecakes, fudge, toast, and cookies. Today, I thought I'd put a festive twist on a traditional conversation heart cookie by cutting a notch in each so they can be hung off the side of a coffee mug or glass of milk. I used Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix to keep these as simple as possible and even decorated them with Betty Crocker Red Cookie Icing.

    They're bright and colorful and most importantly, sweet!

    To get started, gather all of your ingredients.

    Make the cookie dough, then divide the dough into four equal parts. Use Betty Crocker Neon Gel Food Colors to color your dough pink, purple, orange, and green.

    Roll and cut hearts out of the dough, then cut out an inch-long notch. That's just a little wider than the edge of your coffee mug or glass.

    Set cookies on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet at least an inch apart. Pop in the freezer for 15 minutes. This will help the cookies keep their shape. 

    Bake and cool the cookies. 

    Snip off the very tip off the Betty Crocker Red Cookie Icing, leaving just a tiny hole. Pipe Valentine's Day words and phrases onto the cookies. After the icing dries you can hang your cookies on mugs and glasses.
