Tahini-Swirled Brownies

The nutty condiment made from toasted ground sesame seeds is a staple in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking, and these brownies put it to good use for a trendy twist on cream cheese-swirled brownies. If you’re hesitant about trying the ingredient that’s showing up on everyone’s Pinterest boards, this decadent dessert is the way to do it.

Ingredients

Brownies

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Tahini Swirl

  • 1/2 cup tahini
  • 2 oz (from 8-oz package) cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg

    Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom and sides of 9-inch square pan with shortening or butter.

    In 2-quart saucepan, melt butter and chocolate over medium-low heat, stirring constantly. Cool 5 minutes.

    Add 1 1/4 cups sugar; mix to combine. Add 3 eggs and vanilla; mix to combine. Add flour, baking powder and salt; mix just until moistened. Stir in chocolate chips. Spread batter in pan.

    In small bowl, stir tahini, cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar and 1 egg until smooth. Spoon tahini mixture by tablespoonfuls evenly over batter. Cut through several times with knife for marbled design.

    Bake 28 to 32 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached. Cool completely in pan on rack, about 2 hours. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

Expert Tips

  • Tahini is made from toasted ground sesame seeds. It is sometimes made from untoasted seeds and is labeled “raw.”
  • Look for tahini in the condiment aisle of your grocery store.
  • Softening the cream cheese will make it much easier to blend with the tahini.
