Ingredients

  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate pieces/chips
  • Cinnamon sugar (about 1 tablespoon)
  • Caramel sauce, to taste

Steps

  • 1
You'll need a large oval slow-cooker. Spray the inside of the slow-cooker with cooking oil spray.
  • 2
In a large bowl, whisk together the cake mix, water and oil for two minutes. Stir in the apples and chocolate.
  • 3
Pour the cake batter into the prepared slow-cooker. Sprinkle the top liberally with cinnamon sugar.
  • 4
Cover the slow-cooker and cook on high setting for about 2 1/2 hours, until cooked through and a skewer inserted in the center comes out almost clean.
  • 5
Serve hot or cooled with a drizzle of caramel on the top. This is also great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.

More About This Recipe

  • You've had old-fashioned apple cakes -- yum. These days, you can mix it and ignore it, and let your slow cooker do the rest of the work!

No really. I know it sounds a little bizarre. But it’s worth every hands-off minute.

It took me a really long time to wrap my head around the idea of baking a cake inside my trusty slow cooker. I associate my slow cooker with a sort of braising style of cooking where food is cooked low and slow with liquid to make it moist and tender.

So how does that translate to making an actual cake?

This Slow Cooker Caramel Apple Surprise Cake is a sweet vanilla cake that’s dotted with bits of tart apple then drizzled with caramel sauce. And the surprise? A secret layer of chocolate along the bottom of the cake -- like a de facto crust.

Well, a slow cooked cake is not your standard run-of-the-mill baked cake. It’s moist with a loose crumb and an incredibly airy texture. It’s a whole different cake experience – but it’s a totally amazing one.

Making this cake is simple as can be. Beat together the cake batter ingredients (cake mix, water, oil and eggs) and stir in diced apples and chocolate chips.

Then pour it all into the slow cooker and cook it on high for about 2 ½ hours.

That’s it. And it totally couldn’t be easier.
